HELP! My Child is Overweight!

Experts estimate that 15% of kids are overweight, while another 15% are at risk of becoming overweight.

Why?

Not only are our modern eating habits largely devoid of home prepared, fresh foods, but the foods that we typically have access to are fiddled and riddled with growth hormones, colourants and flavourants that wreak havoc with our hormones. The last and current generation of kids have been raised on this food which explains premature sexual maturity, the extreme increase in levels of fat, prevalence of diseases such as asthma and diabetes - the list goes on.

But what's the solution?

We deserve better, and so do our kids. Read our previous article regarding healthy eating for good tips on eating well.

Change to Natural Foods to Help Secure a Healthy Future

We are all affected by these and you have probably heard about one or all of them at some time or another:- additives, flavourants, colourants, 'E numbers', genetic engineering, disease resistant crops - the list goes on.

The fact is you cannot get away from fiddled food - but what you can do, is select healthier, less processed alternatives to fast food and pre-packaged food.

A healthy diet (by today's standards) should consist of:-

Fresh fruit and vegetables

Fruit and veg that lasts in the fridge for longer than a few days is not fresh - it is genetically modified! so rather grow your own or support your local vege shop or farmers market. Your body and your pocket will thank you.

Beans, pulses and nuts

Cheap and an excellent source of easily digestible protein. For example, buy dried chickpeas and hydrate them yourself - will take about half an hour. You will feel better knowing that you are consuming fewer additives and of course you wont need to worry about the carcinogens and hormones found in meat.

Unrefined grains

Instead of buying bleached american rice, opt for brown rice. If the whole nutty brown rice thing isnt your speed, then try natural basmati rice which is softer and full of flavour!

Filtered water

Even in countries where tap water is traditionally potable, an in line filter is a good idea to remove chemicals and heavy metals. Your tea will taste better too.

Natural (unflavoured) teas & Ground Coffee

Stay away from flavoured teas - they contain those pesky little flavourants and additives we are trying to avoid. If you want chamomile tea, get a plant or the dried herb and prepare your own. Even if the bottle says it's 100% pure, its processed, so rather opt for ground coffee.

Organic / Free Range

Opt for organic or free range, locally produced foods and check for labelling that states that what you're buying is hormone free.

Make Informed Food Choices

Eating a bag of crisps (or chips!) wont kill you and nor will a can of cooldrink or a packet of sweets. Even the odd pizza or burger is fine. However we shouldn't consume these things as our staple diet every day, and when we do, we should be consciously aware of what we are putting in our mouths.

Tonica Cakes are a Good Health-food Choice

Okay, you were waiting for this no doubt, but here's the deal - Tonica cakes are made from all natural ingredients, no flavourants or colourants! There is no magic (or suspect) mix, no funny enzimes or E numbers you need to worry about. Our 'flavours' contain fresh fruit - apples, bananas and so forth that we personally source.

In addition, our cakes do not contain things like 'Guar Gum' to bulk up in your stomach and make you feel full, instead our blend of fibres improves your digestion and helps to eliminate toxins.

Our cakes really are just the perfect blend, of the correct natural ingredients and no doubt a return to what is healthy and good to eat which is what makes our system so incredibly effective!

We believe in healthy eating and we practice what we preach, so you can rest assured that our cakes are a safe, healthy slimming alternative.

One in Ten Obese, New BMI Study Says World Must Lose Weight

Every tenth person in the world is now obese according to a new study jointly carried out by two of the most well respected colleges in the world. Harvard in Massachusetts and London’s Imperial College set about the task of looking at data collected between 1980 and 2008.

The study mainly looks at Body Mass Index or BMI which gives an accurate indication of how fat a person is. The definition of obesity is having a BMI of over 30kg per msq. The study did look also at high blood pressure and cholesterol levels and found that both of these had fallen, however levels of obesity have increased across the globe.

These are some of the figures that came out of the survey. In the latest available figures, 2008, the survey found that 9.8% of males and 13.8% of females suffered from obesity. Men and women in the UK came sixth and ninth respectively against European countries with respect to their body mass index or BMI. The highest rates of obesity were found amongst the Pacific Islanders with 34-35kg per msq BMI and these rates were found to be 70% greater than those found in south East Asian and sub Saharan African nations.

With regards to high rates of cholesterol and blood pressure wealthier nations had managed to reduce both. North American males and Australian females both made significant drops in blood pressure, whereas blood pressure levels were highest in Africa and the Baltic states. UK adults made less of a reduction in blood pressure than comparative European countries.

Looks like the whole world should be looking to try and lose weight.

The Health Risks of being Overweight

Being overweight is usually accompanied by a number of health risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes and high cholesterol which increase the chances of developing heart disease.

It has been well documented that being overweight increases blood pressure, so for those that are already overweight and suffering from hypertension, losing as little as 5kg can have a marked effect on lowering the blood pressure.

What to look for

Hypertension is called ‘the silent killer’ and can go undetected for a long time. There are however, a number of possible symptoms that may occur, and these could vary from person to person. Some of these symptoms include chronic headaches, nosebleeds, fatigue, palpitations, blurred vision, dizziness, nausea and drowsiness. Have your blood pressure tested if you suffer from any combination of these symptoms.

The Diabetes Factor

Diabetes is another health risk associated with overweight and some of the symptoms include frequent urination, unquenchable thirst, loss of vision, tingling or numbness in hands, legs and feet as well as dry itchy skin. Schedule an appointment with your doctor to have your glucose levels tested if you are experiencing any of the above symptoms.

Check Your Cholesterol

High cholesterol is one of the primary contributors to heart disease but unfortunately there are no definite symptoms.  In spite of feeling healthy therefore, one could have dangerously high cholesterol levels without being aware of it. It is especially important to have your cholesterol levels checked if you are overweight as this significantly increases your risk factor.

Towards Better Health

By embarking on a healthy weight loss program such as the Tonica© Direct Weight Loss System and by maintaining a healthy weight, the impact of overweight and the accompanying health risks are either greatly reduced or completely eliminated.
