Most people are aware of dietary fibre’s role in preventing constipation, but fibre has many other benefits as well such as lowering the risk of certain diseases and, contrary to popular belief, fibre actually regulates the digestive system, preventing both constipation and diarrhea.
Fibre keeps the digestive system working properly, by speeding up the elimination of waste and toxins from the body, thereby preventing them from remaining in the intestine too long which could cause a build up, leading to a number of diseases.
There are two types of fibre namely soluble and insoluble fibre. Insoluble fibre passes through the body unchanged and promotes the growth of friendly bacteria in the intestine, softening and bulking up waste material and increasing the rate of elimination.
This is important in reducing the risk of certain cancers including bowel cancer as well as haemorrhoids, irritable bowel syndrome and diverticulitis.
Insoluble fibre is found in foods such as whole wheat flour and breads, bran, whole grain cereals, brown rice, nuts, seeds and various fruits and vegetables.
Soluble fibre absorbs water from the intestine which assists in eliminating waste from the body more quickly. Soluble fibre prevents energy spikes from carbohydrates in the body as it slows down digestion, ensuring that energy is released steadily into the bloodstream, preventing hunger and listlessness which is of great benefit to diabetics.
Soluble fibre is believed to lower cholesterol levels by binding with the cholesterol (fat) from food and passing it out of the body quickly, thereby preventing absorption into the bloodstream.
Foods containing soluble fibre include soya products, peas, beans, lentils, oats, barley, vegetables and fruits.
