Why Dietary Fibre is Imperative to a Healthy Body

Most people are aware of dietary fibre’s role in preventing constipation, but fibre has many other benefits as well such as lowering the risk of certain diseases and, contrary to popular belief, fibre actually regulates the digestive system, preventing both constipation and diarrhea.

Fibre keeps the digestive system working properly, by speeding up the elimination of waste and toxins  from the body, thereby preventing them from remaining in the intestine too long which could cause a build up, leading to a number of diseases.

There are two types of fibre namely soluble and insoluble fibre. Insoluble fibre passes through the body unchanged and promotes the growth of friendly bacteria in the intestine, softening and bulking up waste material and increasing the rate of elimination.

This is important in reducing the risk of certain cancers including bowel cancer as well as haemorrhoids, irritable bowel syndrome and diverticulitis.

Insoluble fibre is found in foods such as whole wheat flour and breads, bran, whole grain cereals, brown rice, nuts, seeds and various fruits and vegetables.

Soluble fibre absorbs water from the intestine which assists in eliminating waste from the body more quickly. Soluble fibre prevents energy spikes from carbohydrates in the body as it slows down digestion, ensuring that energy is released steadily into the bloodstream, preventing hunger and listlessness which is of great benefit to diabetics.

Soluble fibre is believed to lower cholesterol levels by binding with the cholesterol (fat) from food and passing it out of the body quickly, thereby preventing absorption into the bloodstream.

Foods containing soluble fibre include soya products, peas, beans, lentils, oats, barley, vegetables and fruits.
Tonica© cakes are low in fats and calories and are the perfect blend of dietary fibre that will keep your digestive system working optimally, ensuring that you achieve and maintain a healthy weight and boundless energy.

Boost Weight Loss with Hidden Veggies!

Hiding veggies in your family’s favourite dishes is a unique way of getting them to eat more fresh veggies and fruit which contain a variety of important nutrients, while reducing the kilojoule content as well as saving money on expensive high protein foods such as meat, fish and dairy products.

Replacing up to 25% per weight, of the high kilojoule ingredients in standard dishes such as meat or chicken casseroles, fish cakes, burger patties, macaroni cheese and cake and bread recipes with pureed vegetables, is a healthy and cost effective way to ensure that your family is receiving the best nutrition while making weight loss completely effortless.

Add half a cup of cooked and pureed cabbage, cauliflower, butternut or squash to casseroles, cheesy pasta dishes or mince while cooked and pureed pumpkin or carrot may be added to cakes and breads.

By diluting meat, chicken or fish dishes with canned or cooked and minced legumes such as beans or chickpeas, it is possible to reduce energy intake by up to 1512kj per day as these foods contain little or no fats and have the added benefit of being low GI.

To stretch your budget and reduce kilojoule intake even further, puree seasonal fresh fruit and add this to the more expensive foods such as yoghurt and ice cream.

Implementing these simple steps as part of your healthy Tonica© lifestyle, effortless, sustainable weight loss and optimum energy is assured.

Watch out for our forthcoming newsletter series which will bring you mouth watering low kilojoule recipes, weight loss tips and the motivation we all need to lose those unwanted pounds!
